What to Expect

Many of you may be new to the idea of acupuncture and what to expect during a typical treatment. Below is an overall outline of each step of the process. If you still have further questions, please feel free to contact us.

Building meaningful relationships with patients that are founded on trust, respect, compassion, and support is a #1 priority at Challis Acupuncture. During every treatment, you can always rely on Nachelle for her enduring commitment to YOU, and how she can partner with you to achieve your health and lifestyle goals. First, Make An Appointment

Congratulations on making the choice to try acupuncture and prioritize your health and wellbeing! Acupuncture is a wonderful, effective treatment for supporting the body's innate ability to heal itself and alleviate various health imbalances, naturally.

The initial appointment lasts up to 1.5 hours and consists of a detailed health history review and an introductory acupuncture treatment customized for your unique situation. Please email, call, or text us to book your first appointment at Challis Acupuncture. Once you book a new patient appointment, Nachelle will email you with additional details about what to expect at your first acupuncture session, including: how to prepare, what to bring with you, what to wear, payment info, paperwork, and directions to the office.

Before Your First Visit

When you schedule your first acupuncture appointment, I will email you a  comprehensive intake form to complete before arriving at your initial session. The acupuncture intake form asks questions about your current state of wellbeing, health history, family history, current lifestyle, and treatment goals. These questions are important because the holistic approach of traditional medicine takes everything into account. Your current symptoms may not seem related to past health issues, but our bodies are complex landscapes and everything is connected!

Your First Appointment

After reviewing your intake form, we will discuss your condition, and I will examine your pulse and tongue, which are two of the basic diagnostic methods of Oriental medicine. The acupuncture points I choose will depend on your condition, but you can expect approximately 10-20 needles. Once the needles are inserted, I will leave you to rest comfortably for 20-30 minutes with the needles in place. Many people find acupuncture treatment deeply relaxing, and it is not uncommon for patients to fall asleep during this time.

Follow-Up Appointment

At each follow-up appointment, Nachelle will discuss any progress or changes related to your main complaint since your previous treatment. She will also review the current state of other mind-body systems (such as gastrointestinal, neurological, and reproductive health) and reevaluate your tongue and pulse. Nachelle will use this information to confirm or modify her diagnosis and treatment strategy. Next, Nachelle will proceed with her gentle acupuncture, giving you ample time to close your eyes and relax deeply for 30-40 minutes so your body can fully integrate the treatment.

A Few Recommendations

  1. Wear loose clothing to each appointment
  2. Drink plenty of water throughout the day before (and after) your appointment
  3. Eat a small snack before treatment (to avoid an empty stomach) but refrain from eating a large meal directly before your appointment, if possible
