Cupping

Cupping is an ancient technique, used in many cultures, in which a special glass cup is applied to the skin and held in place by suction. The suction draws superficial tissue into the cup, which may either be left in place or glided slowly along the body. Cupping brings fresh blood to the area and helps improve circulation.

Patients often describe the sensation of cupping as a soothing massage that reduces muscle tension. A small pump is used to create a vacuum-like suction inside of glass cups. Cupping can be used for several different conditions. Some applications include treating muscle tension, asthma, allergies, and the common cold, to name a few.

Moxibustion

Moxibustion involves the warming of acupuncture points or specific areas of the body with mugwort, an herb known as moxa. Moxa stimulates circulation, counteracts cold and dampness in the body, and promotes the smooth flow of blood and qi to alleviate pain. This safe, non-invasive, deeply relaxing technique may be used alone or in conjunction with acupuncture needles. Patients find the warming effects of moxa very soothing and comforting.
